Some employees are now required to bring their toilet paper to work due to Elon Musk’s budget cuts at Twitter, which also affected the janitorial staff. A New York Times report claims that due to Musk’s extensive cost-cutting measures, Twitter’s San Francisco headquarters and the company’s Seattle office have started to smell.
Janitors reportedly went on strike in early December to demand higher pay, and Elon Musk allegedly fired them. When Musk ended their contract, the cleaning staff discovered they had been locked out of the Twitter headquarters without prior notice.
The lack of janitors has “left the office in disarray,” so the billionaire’s decision may have been ill-advised. The New York Times reported that the office’s bathrooms have “grown dirty” and are reeking of “leftover takeout food and body odour.” Since no one can replenish supplies, some employees have resorted to bringing their toilet paper to work.
Additionally, only two of four floors of the San Francisco headquarters of Twitter remain open to employees.
Musk said on Tuesday that he “spent the last five weeks cutting costs like crazy” and trying to build a more robust paid subscription service because, in the absence of those efforts, Twitter might be operating with a $3 billion negative cash flow next year. He laid some of the blame on the $12.5 billion in debt stemming from his April agreement to purchase the business as well as the recent interest rate increases by the Federal Reserve.
